Throughout Guy Ritchie's The Covenant[]
In March 2018, Ahmed Abdullah entered the narrative as an interpreter amid the War in Afghanistan. Introduced to U.S. Army Special Forces Master Sergeant John Kinley as a replacement for a fallen comrade, Ahmed's motivation for the job was primarily financial. However, an undercover mission revealed Ahmed's past affiliation with the Taliban through the opium trade, a connection severed when the organization took the life of his son. Ahmed's loyalty was demonstrated when he saved Kinley's team from a Taliban ambush, earning Kinley's respect despite his initial unpopularity among the unit.
Surviving subsequent attacks and navigating the treacherous Afghan terrain with Kinley, Ahmed's dedication was further tested. During one mission, he saved Kinley after he was wounded and incapacitated. Despite facing multiple ambushes, Ahmed's commitment to Kinley and the mission remained steadfast.
Seven weeks later, back in California, Kinley learned of the danger Ahmed and his family faced due to their involvement in past events. Despite unsuccessful attempts to secure U.S. visas for them, Kinley, emotionally tormented, decided to undertake a personal mission to rescue Ahmed. Operating under the alias Ron Kay, Kinley sought assistance from Lieutenant Colonel Vokes and private military contractor Parker. Ahmed's role was pivotal during this endeavor, as he accompanied Kinley through perilous situations, including encounters with the Taliban and near-capture at a checkpoint.
Upon reaching Ahmed's hideout, Kinley persuaded him and his family to accompany him to the U.S. The mission took a dangerous turn as Parker, realizing Kinley's true identity, provided crucial air support to counter the Taliban threat. A fierce gunfight ensued at Darunta Dam, where Ahmed and Kinley, despite exhausting their ammunition, were ultimately rescued by the arrival of the AC-130 gunship and Apache attack helicopter. Ahmed's resilience and loyalty were crucial elements in the success of the mission.
Escorted back to Bagram, the group left Afghanistan on an Airbus A400M. The film concluded with a somber note about the fate of Afghan interpreters, emphasizing the tragic reality that over 300 interpreters affiliated with the U.S. military were murdered by the Taliban after the organization's recapture of Afghanistan, with thousands more living in hiding.
