Avatar is a franchise of epic science fiction films created and directed by James Cameron, while produced by Lightstorm Entertainment and distributed by 20th Century Studios.
The series' first film, released in 2009, notably remains the all-time highest-grossing film as of 2022. Its first sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, was released in 2022 after a lengthy development process, with the second, Avatar: Fire and Ash, due for release in 2025. Two further untitled sequels are currently in development to be released in 2029 and 2031.
All announced films are said have "fully encapsulated" standalone plots that "come to their own conclusions". The four sequel films also have an overarching meta-narrative that connects them to create a large interconnected saga.
