- Avengers 5 was originally announced in July 2022 as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. It was later re-branded in July 2024 as Avengers: Doomsday following Marvel Studios firing Jonathan Majors and moving away from Kang.
- The name was changed from Avengers: The Kang Dynasty to Avengers: Doomsday. The change was announced at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday 27th July 2024, the same day that Robert Downey Jr. was announced to be returning to the MCU, in a new role as Victor Von Doom/Dr. Doom.

- As of July 2024 the only confirmed cast members are Robert Downey Jr. as Dr. Doom along with Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Fantastic Four.
- Robert Downey Jr. revealed on The Hollywood Reporter's 'Awards Chatter' podcast that he, Kevin Feige & the Russo Brothers agreed to return during the dual writers & actors strikes during 2023.
- Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantuamnia writer Jeff Loveness was initially hired to write the screenplay for the film in 2023. However after the Ant-Man sequel underperformed at the box-office, Loveness was replaced with Michael Waldron. Waldron was previously set to write Avengers: Secret Wars as well. In San Diego Comic-Con 2024, however, Stephen McFeely was announced as the new screenwriter for Avengers: Doomsday. McFeely previously co-wrote the Captain America films and Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame in the Infinity Saga.
- Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige initially announced the film in SDCC 2022, titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Kang the Conqueror was originally set to be the archenemy of the Avengers, played by actor Jonathan Majors. Majors appeared as a Kang variant in the Disney+ series Loki (2021) and then Kang himself in the film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. However after the film underperformed in the box office, Marvel reportedly began planning to replace Kang as the archnemesis for the Avengers. In December 2023, Majors was found guilty in assault charges brought by his former girlfriend after which Disney would fire him from his Marvel contract. Finally in SDCC 2024, Marvel would announce the total rebranding of Avengers 5 to Avengers: Doomsday (2026) where Dr. Doom would be the new archnemesis, played by Robert Downey, Jr. who had previously played Iron Man/Tony Stark in the Infinity Saga.
- Marks the return of directors Anthony & Joe Russo to the MCU in seven years, following Avengers: Endgame. Destin Daniel Cretton, director of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was previously selected as director in 2022 (when the film was titled The Kang Dynasty) until his departure in early 2024.
- Robert Downey, Jr. is not the first MCU actor to play multiple characters in the franchise. Actress Gemma Chan played Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel and as Sersi in Eternals. Paul Bettany had voiced JARVIS in the Iron Man films and would later play Vision from Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). Chris Evans had played Captain America in the Infinity Saga and would later return as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine.
