Biography[]
Carl grew up on a sharecropping farm in Kentucky and dropped out of school to help his family. However, his dream was not to be stuck on the farm forever. Currently, he is attending the U.S. Navy’s Diving and Salvage School in Bayonne, New Jersey, and is inspired by Master Chief Petty Officer Billy Sunday’s heroics in the South Pacific.
As an African-American, Carl faces twice the hardship of a white recruit in the Navy, but he sees this as an opportunity to conquer the bigotry that stands against him and prove everyone wrong. He is falling for an aspiring doctor named Jo, who is helping him through his training. Carl's challenge is to become the Navy’s first African-American master diver, and he sees it as a worthwhile cause.
