This is the personal vision for hypothetical hard media releases of each of the main Dorling Kindersley Vision series – for now, I will only include the pre-existing episodes, plus continuations or remakes from my previous personal vision blogs. They will include information on cover art, special features and how the programmes are divided up between discs. As well as DVDs, this will also include games and companion books.

Back cover

There are very few pictures on the back cover, with just some more hand-drawn foliage at the top; the main title, complete series subheading and ‘Narrated by Johnny Morris’ are the three largest pieces of text at the top of the cover.

The first paragraph in the blurb reads ‘Find out what growing up is like as young animals discover their exciting new world. SEE HOW THEY GROW is a delightful natural history series for young children which dramatizes the young lives of a range of animals through endearing stories, gentle humour and superb live action photography.’

After this blurb comes the full list of ten episodes that are included within the DVD boxset.

At the bottom of the back cover is the text that includes the barcode, age ratings, copyright information, running times and companies involved in producing the DVD.

Back cover

There are very few pictures on the back cover, with just some more hand-drawn foliage at the top; the main title, complete series subheading and ‘Narrated by >insert narrator<’ are the three largest pieces of text at the top of the cover.

Special features

Both DVDs have no real behind the scenes footage or special features, other than a set of full English subtitles.

The menu on the DVD select screen is very simple to use – viewers can select either a particular episode (e.g., Desert Animals), ‘Play All’ or to turn subtitles on or off; on selecting an episode, the new menu now has five options – the top one is ‘Play All’ but the other four allow the viewer to watch just a single animal (for example, viewers could select from Tarantula, Gerbil, Tortoise or Gecko under Desert Animals), which will make selection process easier and allow viewers to skip animals they may not wish to see; the music on the select screen is a simple track of natural sounds like birdsong – the theme tune is not used as it is so prevalent in the main programmes.

Special features[]

Each boxset will have a game on the fourth disc called ‘Match the Facts’, which is taken from the Amazing Animals Activity Centre computer game; in it a series of facts about an animal will be presented and the player has to choose which of four animals the correct answer is – there will be thirteen questions that each relate to one episode, but a total of thirty-nine questions in the pool to choose from. On each disc there will also be a fact-file about four animals from each episode on the disc, with the facts narrated by Tom Clarke-Hill.

The menu on the DVD select screen has four options – Play All, which plays all the episodes on the disc; Select Episode, which allows the viewer to manually choose which episodes they want to watch; Fact-File, which includes the feature mentioned in the preceding paragraph and Subtitles, which allows the viewer to turn subtitles on or off. The final disc in the set also has Match the Facts underneath Fact-File. The select screen itself has some of the music from the programme (but not the main title theme) and regularly has Henry the Lizard move across, sometimes cajoling the viewer into choosing what they want to do.

The second paragraph reads ‘The series unravels a fascination shared by writers, artists and scientists. Dramatic storytelling by Zoe Wannamaker and John Shrapnel, location filming and computer graphic reconstructions take the viewer on an exciting and informative journey through the mysterious caverns of the imagination.’

Eyewitness Virtual Reality games[]

Part of the release of the new Eyewitness seasons would also involve the recreation and release of the educational interactive games in the Virtual Reality series. This time, they would truly be virtual reality – as well as the games and standard Eyewitness picture frames, there would also be artefacts that can be viewed in three dimensions and some of the studio footage would be used to make it appear as if real animals related to the game are wandering the Eyewitness Museum.

The re-release would involve remaking the four pre-existing games, producing the fifth that never materialised and creating at least another eleven games – if multiple games are owned, they can be played together, with each topic on a different floor of the Eyewitness Museum.

The remade or completed versions would be:

  • Bird (remade, and based on the episode of the same name)
  • Cat (remade, and based on the episode of the same name)
  • Dinosaur (remade, and based on the episode of the same name)
  • Earth (expanded, and based on the episodes Volcano and Rock and Mineral)
  • Shark (never produced, based on the episode of the same name)

Some new titles that could be included are:

  1. Jungle (based on the episodes Jungle and Amazon)
  2. Insect (based on the episode of the same name)
  3. Mammal (based on the episode of the same name)
  4. Ocean (based on the episodes Ocean, Seashore and Abyss)
  5. Monster (based on the episode of the same name – this game would uniquely involve two separate Eyewitness Museums, with the main one focusing more on frightening real animals and the other one about mythical beasts; this second Museum is accessible by activating the human bust in the middle of the Museum, in the same way it appears in the Monster episode)
  6. Human Body (based on the episode Human Machine)
  7. Poison (based on the episode of the same name)
  8. Microorganism (based on the episode of the same name)
  9. Predator (based on the episode of the same name)
  10. Outer Space (based on the episodes Planets, Universe and Moon)
  11. Habitat (based on the episode of the same name, plus all other broadly habitat-themed episodes)

To add interest, there would be two modes – the Discovery mode functions basically the same as the original PC games, while the Adventure mode relies on finding clues to allow the escape from the Eyewitness Museum. As more clues are found, hazards start appearing (for example, the Dinosaur game would have an increasing number or variety of hostile dinosaurs appear, or the Cat game would have the big cats start to hunt the player).

Companion Eyewitness books[]

As part of the release of the four new Eyewitness seasons, there would also be the release of some books in the official Eyewitness series linked to some of these episodes. This follows the tradition of some Eyewitness episodes preceding the release of their associated book title, sometimes by several years. Ten episodes where an associated book would definitely be planned include:

  • Brain (from season four) – about the human and animal brains, their regions and the study of the brain
  • Microorganism (from season four) – about the diversity and study of microscopic living things
  • Poison (from season four) – about the toxins of animals and plants and their place in the world
  • Reef (from season five) – about the coral reef ecosystem, how it forms, its wildlife and human interactions with reefs
  • Night (from season five) – an overview of life that emerges at night, as well as the adaptations for the night
  • Fire (from season five) – the natural and social history of fire, including human use of fire and firefighting
  • Parasite (from season six) – about animals and plants that have parasitic behaviour and their role in the wider world
  • Habitat (from season six) – an overview of the world’s habitats and how they are each connected
  • Parrot (from season seven) – an overview of all the parrot families, their lifestyle and human interactions with them
  • Zoology (from season seven) – about the history of the study of animals, and how animals are studied in the wild

Also, season three episodes Monster, Bear, Sight and Survival would also get their own book titles as part of this release.
