DC Studios, formerly known as DC Films, is the current production company that develops all films based on DC Comics. Parent company Warner Bros. handles the distribution and secures financing. They are a relatively new studio; previously films based on DC Comics were not synergized until Jonah Hex and Green Lantern, their first attempt to launch a shared universe to compete with Marvel Studios. Formed in 2016, DC Studios is best known as a major production company on the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).
DC Studios was previously led founders Jon Berg and Geoff Johns from 2016-18, then by president Walter Hamada from 2018 to October 2022, working under and reporting directly to the co-CEOs and co-Chairpersons of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy. Since November 2022, the studio is led by co-chairmen and co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. The studio's first major release was the 2016 DCEU film Suicide Squad.
