The film was a critical and commercial disappointment there, only grossing US$2.1 million from 795 venues, being overshadowed by the release of Beauty and the Beast.
The New York Times wrote "it a fantasy-adventure for the whole Family", NBC-TV Calls it "Children enjoy Watching it again and again"
Los Angeles Times wrote that the movie set a standard as far beneath that of Sleeping Beauty, Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert awarded the film with "Two Thumbs Up"
