The fictional superhero Superman, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster has appeared in 11 live-action films. He first appeared in three serials Superman (1948), Atom Man vs. Superman (1950) and Superman and the Mole Men (1951). Four films directed by Richard Donner, Richard Lester and Sidney J. Furie starring Christopher Reeve titled Superman (1978), Superman II (1980), Superman III (1983) and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987) it had two spin-offs Supergirl (1984) and Steel (1997).
The series languished for years with several attempts to reboot the franchise, most famously with Nicolas Cage in Tim Burton's Superman Lives. Other directors such as McG and Brett Ratner tried to get a new movie off the ground. A modern take finally materialized in 2006 starring Brandon Routh titled Superman Returns (2006). D.J. Cotrona was cast in Dr. George Miller's Justice League: Mortal, which was canceled just before filming was set to begin.
It was rebooted again in 2013 starring Henry Cavill titled Man of Steel (2013) with two follow ups titled Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017). There currently no plans for any Superman solo films, only crossovers and team-up movies.
