Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is a 2007 fantasy adventure film directed by David Yates and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is based on the novel of the same name by J. K. Rowling. The film, which is the fifth instalment in the Harry Potter film series, was written by Michael Goldenberg and produced by David Heyman and David Barron. The story follows Harry Potter's fifth year at Hogwarts as the Ministry of Magic is in denial of Lord Voldemort's return. The film stars Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, alongside Rupert Grint and Emma Watson as Harry's best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. It is the sequel to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and is followed by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Live-action filming took place in England and Scotland for exterior locations and Leavesden Film Studios in Watford for interior locations from February to November 2006, with a one-month break in June. Post-production on the film continued for several months afterwards to add in visual effects. The film's budget was reportedly between £75 and 100 million ($150–200 million). Warner Bros. released the film in the UK on 12 July 2007 and in North America on 11 July, both in conventional and IMAX theatres; it is the first Potter film to be released in IMAX 3D.

Order of the Phoenix is the unadjusted 22nd highest-grossing film of all time, and a critical and commercial success, acclaimed as "the best one yet" by Rowling, who has consistently offered praise for the film adaptations of her work. The film opened to a worldwide 5-day opening of $333 million, fourth all-time, and grossed nearly $940 million total, second to Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End for the greatest total of 2007.

Plot[]

While trying to outrun a storm, Harry Potter and Dudley Dursley are attacked by a dementor but Harry uses the Patronus charm to scare it off. Back at the Dursley's, Harry receives a letter saying he is expelled from Hogwarts. The Order of the Phoenix, a secret organization founded by Dumbledore, tells Harry that Dumbledore has persuaded the Ministry of Magic to let Harry have a hearing. Then they take him to their headquarters, Grimmauld Place, and inform him the Ministry is in denial to Voldemort's return. Harry reunites with Ron and Hermione. Sirius mentions Voldemort is after an item he did not have during his previous attack. At the hearing, Dumbledore arrives and convinces Minister Fudge to let Harry return to Hogwarts.

At the school, Harry befriends Luna Lovegood of Ravenclaw as both can see Thestrals that are seen by those embraced death, and learns Fudge has appointed a nasty inquisitor as new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher: Dolores Umbridge. She and Harry immediately clash, and she punishes Harry for his "lies" by forcing him to write a message with a magic quill, scarring his hand. When Ron and Hermione notice Harry's scars they are outraged, but Harry refuses to go to Dumbledore, who has distanced himself from Harry since the summer. Among students, Seamus Finnigan, give Harry a rough time. Umbridge keeps meddling in other people's business and pressuring the student body to study for the O.W.L. exams other than practicing magic. Ginny replaces Harry as Gryffindor's Seeker. Luna consoles Harry not to feel isolated from others. Disappearances raises in the wizarding world and the Ministry place the blame on Sirius. As Umbridge's control over the school increases, Ron and Hermione aid Harry in forming a secret group to teach students defensive spells in the hidden Room of Requirement that appears only when needed, calling themselves "Dumbledore's Army" (D.A.). Umbridge recruits Filch and some Slytherin students as her Inquisitorial Squad to expose the group. Meanwhile, Harry and Cho develop romantic feelings for each other.

Harry has a vision involving Ron's father Arthur Weasley at the Ministry, from the point of view of Arthur's attacker. Concerned that Voldemort will exploit this connection to Harry, Dumbledore instructs Snape to give Harry Occlumency lessons to defend his mind from Voldemort's influence. The connection between Harry and Voldemort leads Harry to further isolate himself from his friends. After spending Christmas at Grimmauld Place, Seamus and others are now convinced the Ministry's reports aren't adding up, apologies to Harry. Bellatrix Lestrange, Sirius' deranged Death Eater cousin, escapes from Azkaban along with nine other Death Eaters. Neville tells Harry how his parents, Alice and Frank Longbottom, were also torture and killed long ago by Bellatrix and Crouch Jr. when they refused to cooperate. At Hogwarts, Harry accomplishes in teaching the group the Expelliarmus and Patronus charm. Hagrid reveals he has been partying with the giants to defend Hogwarts. Umbridge and her Inquisitorial Squad expose D.A. apparently. Dumbledore flees as Fudge orders his arrest accusing him of plotting a coup d'état. Umbridge appointed as the new headmistress. Harry's relationship with Cho falls apart as she is to blame. During Occlumency lessons, Harry is shunned by the discovery through Snape's memories why Snape hated Harry's father James, who often bullied him. Students are force to do the O.W.L. exams in the Great Hall. Fred and George cause pandemonium around the school in revenge.

Harry has another vision, this one of Sirius being tortured by Voldemort. Despite the warnings, Harry, Ron and Hermione rush to Umbridge's fireplace to alert the Phoenix via the Floo Network, since hers is the only fireplace not being monitored, but Umbridge stops them before they can do so. As Umbridge tortures Harry, Hermione tricks Umbridge into entering the Forbidden Forest in search of Dumbledore's "secret weapon". She and Harry lead her to the hiding place of Hagrid's giant half-brother, Grawp, only to be confronted by centaurs that seize Umbridge after she attacks and insults them. Harry, Hermione, Ron, Luna, Neville, and Ginny fly to the Ministry on Thestrals in an attempt to save Sirius.

The six enter the Department of Mysteries, into a room Harry had seen, where they uncover a bottled prophecy, the item Voldemort is after. Hearing the prophecy states either Neville or Harry is born with the fate equal to Voldemort. However, they are ambushed by Death Eaters including Lucius and Bellatrix. Lucius reveals the vision of Sirius being tortured that Harry saw was simply a ruse to lure Harry into the Death Eaters' grasp. Harry refuses to give Lucius the prophecy, and a fight between D.A. and the Death Eaters ensues. Ginny conjures a skilled Reductor spell that crumbles the room; however, the Death Eaters take everyone except Harry as hostages, threatening to kill them unless he surrenders the prophecy. Harry obliges just as Sirius arrives with Phoenix members: Moody, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Remus, and his wife Nymphadora Tonks. As they attack the Death Eaters, Lucius drops the prophecy, destroying it. Just as Sirius overpowers Lucius, Bellatrix kills Sirius into an archway. A vengeful Harry chases after Bellatrix, then Voldemort appears, but Dumbledore arrives through the Floo Network moments before Voldemort can slay Harry. A duel between Voldemort and Dumbledore ensues, destroying much of the Atrium, while Bellatrix escapes. After the two prove evenly matched, Voldemort possesses Harry to try to get Dumbledore sacrifice Harry, but the love Harry feels for his friends and family makes it impossible for Voldemort to remain in his body. Ministry officials arrive before Voldemort disapparates; Fudge is forced to admit that Voldemort has indeed returned and resigns as Minister in disgrace. It becomes the top news of the Daily Prophet. Umbridge (for illegal use of Cruciatus Curse and sending a dementor after Harry of her own accord) is removed from Hogwarts and Dumbledore returns as headmaster. Dumbledore explains he distanced himself from Harry throughout the year hoping it would lessen the risk of Voldemort using their connection. Harry comes to terms with the prophecy that Professor Trelawney had foretold; "Neither can live while the other survives." Sirius' will states that his possessions are to be inherited by Harry.
