- Many of the plot points are taken from Mark Twain's story "The Prince and the Pauper".
- The film was titled after the song "It Takes Two" by Marvin Gaye and Kim Weston which was also featured in the closing credits.
- Kirstie Alley plays a character named Diane, which is also the name of the character she replaced on "Cheers", who was played by Shelley Long.
- Steve Gutenberg and Phillip Bosco appeared together in "3 Men and a Baby"
- When Amanda is first mistaken for Alyssa at the Callaway house, she refers to Vincenzo as "Lurch". This is a reference to The Addams Family (1964) with Lurch being the name of the tall, scary butler.

- Kirstie Alley and Steve Guttenberg had both previously worked with Ted Danson, on "Cheers" and in "Three Men and a Baby" and its sequel, respectively.
- After the full moon placed amphibian was found in her bunk, the conversation afterwards had references "the princess and the frog" Which was her (thier) older DJ's play in the Olsen twins shared sitcom Full House
