Joy Newsome is a fictional character appearing in the 2015 film Room, from which she serves as the protagonist. She is portrayed by Brie Larson.
Biography[]
Joy was born in 1991 to Robert and Nancy Newsome. An only child, Joy was very popular in her school years, especially in high school. She was on the cheerleading team and she competed in track with her friends. By the time she was 17, she was kidnapped by a neighbor who lived nearby her house; whose name was Old Nick. He held her captive for seven years and during this time, Joy was repeatedly abused and sexually assaulted by Old Nick. Joy ended up getting pregnant at 19 with their child, who she gave birth to in the confined shed she was being held captive in. Joy named her newborn son Jack.
At some point a few years later, Joy became pregnant again but she experienced a stillbirth, as she had a baby girl and Old Nick took the baby away and buried her at Joy's request because he wouldn't let her out to do this herself. Joy never mentioned her daughter to Jack as he grew up and he was led to believe he was an only child.
Room[]
She is the mother of Jack Newsome who was kidnapped by a stranger and imprisoned in a soundproof and fortified shed in his garden, where she remained. Seven years later, the events of the film begin where Jack celebrates his fifth birthday.
