LAIKA Studios is a film production company. It specializes in making films using stop-motion photography and shooting "on the ones", meaning scenes are shot at 24 frames a second instead of twelve ("on the twos") as most other stop-motion films have used. This results in smoother, more fluid animation.
The studio also heavily uses 3D printing to create interchangeable pieces for the facial expressions of the puppets. With Coraline, there were 207,336 possible face combinations for Coraline and 17,633 for her mother. As 3D printing technology has advanced, the studio has been able to move beyond hand painting the pieces to having colored pieces produced by the printer directly.
