Katherine Newbury is an acclaimed late-night talk show host with an extensive career in comedy, but her show's ratings have seen a steady decline over the past decade mainly because of her variety of guest stars as they are all people that aren't big names anymore, just idols to Katherine. The network's president, Caroline Morton, tells Katherine she's going to be replaced due to her lack of guest host and the show's quality. In an attempt to revamp the show, Katherine has Molly Patel hired to her writing staff, mainly on the basis that she is an Indian-American woman while all remaining writers are white men. She has a little trouble getting along with most of the writers, especially Tom, but is determined to do well. When the writers hear the news about Katherine getting replaced, most of them are shocked but not surprised as people aren't talking about the show so much anymore. They also learn more about Molly and some of them think she'll just be another writer who won't last a month like most of the other show's writers.

The writers soon meet with Katherine who wants to work with them to make better results. Molly eventually learns that up until now most of the writers have never met Katherine before. Although Molly has little experience in comedy and initially struggles, she proves her worth by giving Katherine good material to work with on her show as well as ideas on how to reach out to a bigger audience. At first things don't go well, especially after a bad interview with YouTube star Mimi Imfirst. To help people see a different side to her, Katherine's new publicist suggests she hosts a party at her house. While at the party, Molly meets Katherine's husband Walter who tells Molly to be useful to Katherine so that way Katherine will need her. During the party, Katherine learns that Caroline wants to pick young, popular comedian Daniel Tennant to replace her as the new host. Katherine resists, as Daniel's comedy is vulgar and misogynistic even all of her writing staff hates him. She asks Caroline for another chance but she tells Katherine that she had ten years of low ratings to turn this all around. Katherine however makes it clear that she won't have her show destroyed by a vulgar stand up.

After Katherine follows Molly to a comedy benefit and tries out some material which the audience loves. The two come back and Katherine tells everyone that they will add new materials, segments, as well as modern stars. The results prove successful as everyone is talking about the show and calling it a "must see." Even Caroline's kids are enjoying the show which it is. Unfortunately, she soon has to introduce Daniel Tennent as her replacement. With backup from her writers, Katherine defies the network's demands and decides on air to continue her career. Molly comes over to see Charlie only to find out that he's with someone else, even at work the next day she won't have anything to do with him. Tom tells Molly that after graduation he and Charlie went on a roadtrip and stopped at a boardwalk and after leaving at one point, Charlie had left and they didn't see each other for the rest of the summer. Even though Tom was mad at Charlie he had to get over it because when you're coworkers with old friend you are either best friends or mortal enemies.

Before long, an email Charlie wrote to Katherine, gets leaked, in which it is revealed that she had an affair with him after her husband Walter was initially diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. In the midst of the drama, Katherine fires Molly after she criticizes her for her response to the news. At the advise of Tom, Molly gets her own house over in Brooklyn and gets a job with Seth Meyers. Eventually, Katherine makes amends with Walter and the other writers and admits her affair to her audience. Her sincerity and passion for the show convinces Caroline to let her stick around, and Katherine later apologizes to Molly, hiring her back. The show continues to stay on air.

One year later, the show's team has diversified, Molly is promoted to co-lead monologue writer, she and Tom are now in a relationship, and Katherine's show is more successful than ever.
