Production[]
Development[]
During the writing process for Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) in 2011, George Miller and Brendan McCarthy found that they had enough story material for two additional scripts.[1] In March 2015, during an interview with Esquire, Tom Hardy revealed that he was attached to star in three more Mad Max films following Fury Road.[2] Miller told Wired in May 2015 that if the film was successful, he would tell the other two stories.[3] Later that month, Miller revealed that plans for the sequel had changed and the fifth film in the franchise would instead be titled Mad Max: The Wasteland.[4][5] That October 2015, Miller's team had scripts for two sequels.[6]
Later that month, Miller clarified that The Wasteland was a working title for the sequel.[7] Miller reaffirmed his intent to continue the franchise after reports to the contrary surfaced.[8] In November 2017, it was reported that a lawsuit filed by Miller's production company against Warner Bros. over a disputed $7 million bonus was likely to delay the production of any sequels.[9] In July 2019, Miller told IndieWire that the two films would both involve separately: a Mad Max story and a Furiosa story, in which their possibility is clear.[10]
Following the release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, The Hollywood Reporter clarified that The Wasteland was not yet in development.[11] In June 2024, Hardy (who was promoting an unrelated film at the time) said in an interview that "I don't think [The Wasteland is] happening".[12] However, Miller confirmed the film was happening and that the film was set to start filming during the fall of 2021.
Filming[]
Principal photography was scheduled to begin on 2 June 2020.[13] Filming was put on hold temporarily due to a dispute over Warner Bros. regarding the payments of first three films on 22 August 2020. Filming officially started on 11 September 2024, and will conclude on 21 February 2025.
