I have done some work in the past year or two with templates and switches to determine what links should be displayed on a page. I was thinking that it might be possible to do something like that for the front page of this wiki.
Basically, we'd have a template that contains the following:
premiere date for the movie
possibly the date the movie concluded its run in theaters
Name of the movie
file name of the video for its trailer
All of these fields would be separated by a special character such as ¶ that's not likely to be used in a movie name or page name. We'd read in the line for the movie, extract the date and do a comparison to the current date. Then it should be possible to figure out if it's close enough to be a "coming soon" movie or if it's in the theaters and display it in the right section. Have it cycle through each line until we get 12 or so spaces filed in each section. That way, we'd only have to update one template whenever the marquees at the theaters changes.
I know that there are extensions for MediaWiki that can add functions like FOR/NEXT loops and string manipulation, but I don't know if arrays are supported and that's the only way I can think of right now to build the correct number of entries. There has to be something a bit more dynamic than just resorting to using twelve hard-coded variables.
Have you done any work with MW extensions that might help with the kind of automation I'm thinking of?
I think this is going deeper into.... ahem... the rabbit hole than I've ventured, to be honest, but I'm looking into it and asking another staffer who has dealt with a lot more of this than I have. I'll see what I can find out.
I have been watching a show on the AXS channel called "Nothing But Trailers", which is exactly that. Two came on for upcoming movies we need to be prepared for. The first is called "Southside With You", which is about how Michelle and Barack Obama met. The second is "Denial", which is about the case David Irving filed against Deborah Lipstadt in 1996 after she stated he was a "Holocaust denier". Wikipedia has a pretty big entry on him and his views, and how those have led to him not being considered a reputable historian any more.
It's pretty much guaranteed that pages for both movies are going to attract attention from people that will be, to be blunt, jerks and vandals. I am planning on setting page protection on both of them to the mid-level protection to cut down on some of what they would try to do here.
In the past few days, people have started creating pages and adding videos that describe how to watch movies online. A couple of them were just released in theaters, indicating the online version was probably recorded with a video camera while it was playing in a movie theater. The videos also are misleading since YouTube prevented them from being uploaded, so they are tyring to get around that by putting in the description how to go to a different website to watch the movie.
Also, the users list shows that there are currently ten admins here, but only three of them have made any edits within the past three months. It might be worthwhile to check in with the others to see if they would come back and be more active in this wiki again.
As an alternative, I'd like you to consider granting me admin rights. I haven't asked before because I'm really only here to help out with vandalism. Plus, I adopted a few wikis and became admin on a couple others last year, which means I've got more than enough to keep me busy. But, I see that a fourth active admin would help and I do check this wiki pretty regularly. With an extra admin on duty, we can head off problems before they get too far here.
Happy to grant you admin rights for the very reasons you mention above. I'm fairly confident that kind of garbage violates ToU, if it doesn't then it certainly should. I can check on that tomorrow, but either way it's definitely not allowed here.
126.96.36.199 is the same person from Sweden that has been spamming his Winnie the Pooh fan fiction on various Wikia wikis and on Wikipedia. He's been at this for a year now and that IP address is one of the ones he regularly uses. It would be safe to put a permanent block on that IP address since it's unlikely to be used by other people.
Bleh - Fan-fiction and direct Wikipedia copies, both of which are warned against in bold on the main page. Thanks for the heads-up, a block does seem to be in order - I see they are blocked elsewhere as well, including W'pedia.
This unadministered wiki has problems that can only be solved either by Wikia staff taking more of an active interest in it or, better yet, by staff choosing a sensible active user to promote to adminship. There are currently two hundred and twenty-one articles in the category candidates for deletion. There are dozens of irrelevant images and videos that should be deleted and users are free to keep adding the same nonsense to pages again and again knowing that there's nothing anyone else can do to stop them. This could be one of Wikia's finest wikis but staff need to take action to stop it from becoming a complete mess.
Time for a second request for this block. Gree443 and I are having to clean up after this person on a daily basis. If you're not able to work on this, then please grant admin rights to Gree443 so he can take care of the wiki in your absence. He's put a lot of effort into building the wiki.
I think the time has come to block Fredericko007. He is spending more time uploading fan art, pictures about commercial products, cartoons and a couple of full TV show episodes and movies, than he is adding actual movie-related information. Probably less than 25% of what he uploads is usable. I have marked for deletion over 30 of his uploads in the past few days.
It looks like I need to make a second request for this. Gree443 and I are having to clean up what he uploads on a daily basis. Out of the 600 pictures and videos in the Candidates for deletion category, most of them are his.
Out of the 828 edits, 92% have been uploading videos and pictures, with most of them being about M&M candies, fashion, commercials for cometics, Broadway musicals, dancing Christmas trees, episodes of The Jeremy Kyle Show and a bunch of fan art. For the 60 or so edits that were actually on a page for a movie, most were to add his fan art or videos to that page.
He is not really helping the wiki by doing this and is ignoring the request I put on his message wall back in June to get back on track. I would appreciate it if you would look into this and make a decision about it.
Hia, I'm new to this wiki and was going to try and help by fixing up the category system, which seems to be in a little bit of disorder.
But when I try to create the Browse category, I don't seem able to do so. I've clicked on create and tried to edit the page, yet when I go back to the page it still says it doesn't exist. Help! Am I doing something wrong?
ETA: It seems to be working alright now! Sorry to have bothered you.
