North by Northwest is an 1959 American spy thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Cary Grant. The story follows a hapless New York advertising executive who is mistaken for a government agent by a group of foreign spies, and is then pursued across the country while he looks for a way to survive.

Plot

Middle-aged Madison Avenue advertising executive Roger O. Thornhill is mistaken for a government agent by a gang of spies. He gets involved in a series of misadventures and is pursued across the States by both the spies and the government whilst being helped by a beautiful blonde.

Background Information

James Stewart desperately wanted the lead in the film, but Hitchcock always wanted Cary Grant. So as not to offend his friend, Hitchcock supposedly delayed filming until Stewart was unavailable.
