Sebastian Sommer (born February 5, 1993) is an American filmmaker and writer known for his atmospheric and stylized approach to storytelling.[1]
Early life and education[]
Born in Syracuse, Sommer grew up in Manhattan’s Upper East Side and attended Baruch College Campus High School. He developed an early fascination with cinema during a formative upbringing in New York City.[2] He later studied at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, where he embarked on his journey crafting visually poetic short films that gained early recognition.[3]
Career[]
Sommer’s feature debut, Dragon (2024), is a fantasy-leaning, vignette-structured narrative that melds AI-generated imagery with mythic storytelling.[4][5] Narrated by Sommer himself, Dragon leverages the imperfect, dreamlike quality of AI visuals to evoke a unique narrative. His next project, Revolver (2025), continues his exploration of stylized visual storytelling.[6][7] Sommer has been referred to as a creative visionary by multiple outlets.[8]
Dragon (2024)[]
Sommer’s debut feature Dragon (2024) stands as a bold and unconventional entry into contemporary independent cinema. The film is structured as a series of fragmented vignettes that drift between medieval folklore and dream logic.[9][10] Using AI-generated imagery as a central creative tool, Sommer embraced the technology’s “flaws” and distortions, incorporating its unstable textures into the film’s surreal atmosphere.[11] Critics and viewers have described the work as one of the more unique achievements in new digital cinema.[12]
Revolver (2025)[]
Following Dragon, Sommer released Revolver (2025), a more intimate yet equally stylized project that demonstrates his ability to shift tone while maintaining a strong artistic signature.[13] Where Dragon reveled in maximalism and mythic scale, Revolver pares down into something leaner and moodier, focusing on atmosphere and emotional undercurrents rather than spectacle.[14] Early responses suggest that it represents both a continuation and an evolution of Sommer’s filmmaking voice.[15]
Personal life[]
He cites some of his favorite movies as King Of New York (1990), Night of the Hunter (1955), Miami Vice (2006), and Barry Lyndon (1975).[16]
He cites Stanley Kubrick, Peter Greenaway, and John Carpenter as his biggest influences.[17]
He spends time with his girlfriend and is a watch collector.[18]
