Stephanie Beatriz Bischoff Alvizuri (born 10 February 1981) is an Argentine-American actress and model. She is best known for playing Detective Rosa Diaz in the NBC comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Jessica in the independent drama Short Term 12 (2013).

Early Life & Education[]

Stephanie Beatriz Bischoff Alvizuri was born in Neuquén, Argentina, the daughter of a Colombian father and a Bolivian mother. She arrived in the United States at the age of three with her parents and a younger sister. She grew up in Webster, Texas, outside Houston, and attended Clear Brook High School. The family was "pretty poor," which informed Beatriz's choice in choosing choir in school, as it was an elective that didn't cost money, unlike art class or band. The first day, however, the teacher discouraged Beatriz from continuing, so Beatriz signed up for speech and debate. It was there that she had the opportunity to appear in plays. Her first role was that of the show's villain, and after a classmate mistook her for someone else for the entirety of the show, she realized that she had the ability to transform into someone else through acting. This set her on the path of the dramatic arts.

Beatriz attended the all-women's Stephens College in Missouri. She graduated in 2002. She then moved to New York City to pursue acting. She lived in Los Angeles since 2010.

Career[]

Beatriz had minor roles in the police procedural television series The Closer and Southland, as well as a recurring role as Gloria's sister Sonia in the ABC comedy series Modern Family. She has had numerous stage appearances at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Theatreworks USA, The Old Globe Theatre, and Yale Repertory Theatre.[citation needed] Beatriz had her first feature film role as Jessica in the 2013 acclaimed[citation needed] independent drama Short Term 12.

Since 2013, she has portrayed Detective Rosa Diaz in the Fox and NBC series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, an action comedy series based around the members of a Brooklyn police precinct. In 2019, she directed the season 6 episode "He Said, She Said."

Beatriz starred as Bonnie in the independent feature film The Light of the Moon, written and directed by Jessica M. Thompson. The film premiered at the 2017 South by Southwest Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award for Narrative Feature Competition. She received highly positive reviews for her performance, with The Hollywood Reporter stating that "Beatriz offers a powerful . . . unflinching, authentic performance," while Variety noted that the film was "harrowingly effective" and Beatriz's performance was "expertly balanced and judged." As of 2018 she voices the character Gina Cazador on season 5 of BoJack Horseman.

It was announced in 2019 she would be appearing in the 2021 film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony Award-winning musical In the Heights. Beatriz will also play the titular character in Encanto produced by Disney.

Personal Life[]

Beatriz has severe astigmatism and requires glasses to see. She does not wear them in many of her roles, and therefore has difficulty hitting her marks while on camera.

Sexuality and marriage[]

Beatriz first realized that she was bisexual around age 12 or 13. She experienced biphobia and bisexual erasure from family and friends. In June 2016, Beatriz publicly came out.

In October 2017, Beatriz announced her engagement to fellow actor Brad Hoss. Beatriz and Hoss married on 6 October 2018. In June 2021, they announced her pregnancy with their first child.

Eating disorder[]

Beatriz has described herself as suffering from disordered eating. She developed the problem while in college at an all-women's university, which she said was an environment that helped "create really gnarly behavior that became normalized within that group of women."
